Common types of nursing home negligence
Chronic understaffing and neglect are serious concerns at facilities like Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care, often leading to harmful consequences for residents, such as:
- Insufficient staff can mean residents don’t receive proper nutrition and hydration, increasing the risk of severe health issues.
- Poor hygiene and prolonged immobility may result in painful pressure ulcers (bedsores) and dangerous infections.
- Overburdened caregivers may administer incorrect medication dosages or miss doses altogether, putting residents’ health at risk.
- A lack of supervision raises the chances of falls, which can lead to fractures, head injuries, and lasting disabilities.
- Emotional neglect can leave residents feeling isolated, anxious, and depressed, negatively impacting their mental well-being.
If your loved one has suffered due to neglect or staffing shortages at Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care, legal action may be necessary to hold the facility responsible.

Who is liable for nursing home abuse & neglect at Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care?
Determining liability for nursing home abuse and neglect at facilities like Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care depends on the specific circumstances of your case. Several parties may be held accountable, including:
- If Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care is owned by a larger corporation, the parent company could be liable for systemic problems like understaffing, poor training, or cost-cutting measures that compromise resident care.
- Nursing home administrators are responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Ignoring complaints or failing to uphold care standards may make them legally accountable.
- Doctors, nurses, or other healthcare providers may be responsible if they misdiagnose conditions, make medication errors, or fail to respond to medical emergencies.
- Employees who engage in physical, emotional, or financial abuse of residents can face personal liability.
- If the facility outsources medical care, therapy, or maintenance services, those external companies may be liable for negligence or unsafe conditions.
- If a resident is harmed by a defective medical device or dangerous medication provided by the facility, the manufacturer may share responsibility.
- While not directly liable, government agencies overseeing nursing homes may be investigated if they fail to enforce regulations or respond to reports of neglect or abuse.
If your loved one has suffered due to nursing home abuse or neglect, legal action may be necessary to hold the responsible parties accountable. The experienced attorneys at Garcia & Artigliere can investigate, gather evidence, and fight for the justice your family deserves.

Both federal and state laws require skilled nursing facilities to provide sufficient and competent nursing staffing to meet the needs of their census populations. The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (“CMS”) monitors and regulates skilled nursing facilities and their various staffing levels. In its regulatory role, CMS created the Five-Star Rating System[1] that calculates various quality measures based on the data that each facility provides to CMS as part of their respective participation in the Medicare program. According to CMS, “[n]ursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have much above average quality and nursing homes with 1 star are considered to have quality much below average.”[2] Notably, among the most significant factors reviewed by CMS is the “staffing” provided to each facility’s census population.
Based on the data provided to CMS, CMS has determined that Valley Vista Nursing and Transitional Care LLC, located at 6120 N. Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood, California, garnered a 2 Star overall rating and a 2 Star for health inspections, which ranks toward the bottom of that scale – “below average.”[3] On January 21, 2022, this facility was cited for numerous deficiencies, which are available to review in inquiring whether those same deficiencies may apply to you or your loved one (e.g., failing to “provide appropriate pressure ulcer care and prevent new ulcers from developing,” and “ensure that a nursing home area is free from accident hazards and provides adequate supervision to prevent accidents….”).[4]
